Top Picks For Photo Session Dresses

As a Maryland newborn photographer, I have a few favorite brands that I always recommend to clients when they ask where to find for gorgeous dresses for their photos sessions. My favorite shops range greatly in both price and style, allowing for The ABP client closet is constantly growing while I prepare to open the studio to clients, but in the meantime here are some of my go-to places to shop for timeless, beautiful dresses for your sessions:

1. Needle and Thread

These ethereal dresses are the creme de la creme of photo session dresses. The tulle, the details, the flattering cuts – there is something for everyone! They are definitely a splurge but you can occasionally get them at very reduced prices.

2. Baltic Born

Baltic Born is a great option for any mama! They have so many different styles and colors, and the prices are fantastic for any budget.

3. Red Dress

Like Baltic Born, Red Dress has super cute dresses in flattering cuts and a variety of colors. They also have great prices!

4. Free People

Free People is a classic brand for long, flowy dresses with a boho feel. Dresses like the one pictured are great for all shapes and sizes and come in a variety of beautiful colors.

5. ASOS

Asos has fantastic dresses for any budget. When I was pregnant with my son, I found two gorgeous beaded Asos dresses that I cherish so much! The Maya Maternity line is gorgeous, but there are many beautiful non-maternity options as well.

6. Nothing Fits But

Nothing Fits But is a new favorite of mine as a Maryland newborn photographer. I have a few of their dresses and absolutely love how they are made to fit any shape and come in a variety of colors and light prints. I am OBSESSED with the Kiko dress and plan to add a few more to the client wardrobe!

7. Christy Dawn

Christy Dawn has stunning, simple cottagecore dresses. While on the pricey end for a more casual feel, these dresses are amazing quality and have such classic cuts that they are sure to be lifetime pieces in any wardrobe.

8. Selkie

Like Needle & Thread, Selkie dresses appeal to a more ethereal, fairytale look that translates beautifully in front of the camera. These dresses are pricey but so worth it!

9. Show Me Your Mumu

When looking for photogenic dresses, simplicity is often the top tip I give my clients. Usually long dresses in light colors are perfect for any session, making SMYM a perfect brand to explore when shopping. These may technically be bridesmaids dresses, but there is really something for everyone.

10. Hill House

Hill House’s famous Nap Dress comes in a variety of flattering colors and prints that are perfect for all shapes and sizes. I had a stunning client wear one of these dresses previously and it was the perfect combination of elegant and simple for her newborn session!

11. Rachel Pally

I bought this Rachel Pally Issa dress while pregnant with my son and it is by far one of the best wardrobe purchases I have ever made. The high-quality, heavy fabric is flowy and comfortable and again absolutely perfect for any shape and size, including maternity.

Finding the perfect dress for your photo session is a personal decision, but there are a few tips I always like to share with my clients. The light and airy or true-to-color look is most attainable and beautiful when wearing light colors and avoiding busy prints. There are certain occasions when colors or even black can be beautiful, but overall light colors give photograph best. Especially for newborn and baby sessions, having the focus be on your beautiful new family member and the emotions of the moment are key and clothing can certainly distract from that if not chosen carefully.
