Washington DC cherry blossoms are an absolute must-see. The DC area is famous for its stunning cherry blossoms, which usually bloom in late March to early April. The majority of cherry blossoms in the area are Yoshino cherries that have the classic pale pink to white blossoms. These are the most prevalent type around the Tidal Basin and the National Mall, attracting thousands of tourists each year. While Yoshino cherry trees dominate the landscape during the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the diversity of cherry varieties in the D.C. area adds to magic of the spring season.
Known for their double-pink flowers, Kwanzan Cherry blossom trees are absolutely enchanting. These trees bloom a bit later than Yoshino cherry blossom trees, allowing the portrait season to extend by weeks. These blossoms are more densely packed and give a vibrant display, providing a stunning backdrop for portraits.
Last year I missed Cherry blossom season here in the DC area. I was in Michigan with my family during my dad’s final months of life. It was an incredibly precious time that I am so grateful for. One day, I was driving home from the park that my daughter and I frequented daily and I passed a familiar sight. I had driven into my family’s neighborhood thousands of times in my life. Never once had I noticed the single Kwanzan cherry blossom tree adorning the neighborhood entrance between other random trees. I can’t explain how magical it felt to see it there – exactly when I needed it.
I put my daughter to bed and walked through the neighborhood to photograph this very special tree. People walked by me and asked what I was doing because they couldn’t understand why a tree would garner my attention. Well, I couldn’t understand why they too weren’t captivated by its beauty. These are some of the photos I took that day:
Spring in the DMV is my absolute favorite time of year. Washington DC cherry blossoms are such a stunning sight and truly every photographers dream to photograph! But whether it be cherry blossoms, magnolia trees, tulips, bluebells, or daffodils, all create a stunning backdrop for portraits! I am so looking forward to this magical season!
